It is slower than a card payment and it settles differently, and that difference changes how you should run your store. This article covers what is true of every ACH gateway on Foxy. The individual gateway articles cover the setup steps for each one.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>ACH is a US-only network. Every ACH gateway on Foxy processes USD from US bank accounts.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>The one thing to know first: ACH transactions stay pending\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>An ACH transaction in Foxy is recorded as \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>pending\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode>\u003Cstrong>, and — on all but one gateway — it stays \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>pending\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode>\u003Cstrong>. It will not move to approved or declined on its own.\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>This is not a delay. It is not something that resolves overnight. If you place an ACH order today and look at it in six months, it will still say \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode>.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The reason is simple: the ACH gateways do not tell Foxy what happened. When a card payment is approved or declined, the gateway responds immediately and Foxy records the result. When an ACH debit is submitted, nothing is decided yet — settlement or return happens days later, at the bank — and with one exception, covered next, \u003Cstrong>none of the ACH gateways Foxy supports offers a webhook, callback or notification to report the outcome back\u003C\u002Fstrong>. Foxy never learns it, so Foxy cannot record it.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>The one partial exception: Accept.blue ACH\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>Accept.blue is the only ACH gateway on Foxy built to receive status notifications, and Foxy is set up to verify and act on them. So an Accept.blue ACH transaction \u003Cem>can\u003C\u002Fem> move out of \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode>.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Read &quot;can&quot; carefully. It depends on you registering Foxy&#039;s notification endpoint in your Accept.blue dashboard yourself — Foxy does not do it for you and does not warn you if you have not — and Foxy only acts on a few specific event types. If any of that is not in place, the transaction stays \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode> exactly like every other ACH gateway, with no error to tell you why. See the \u003Ca href=\"\u002Fhelp\u002Fpayment-methods\u002Faccept-blue-ach\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"\">Accept.blue ACH\u003C\u002Fa> article for the setup step.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Everything below applies to Accept.blue ACH too. Reconcile outside Foxy regardless, and build your fulfilment logic to cope with an order that never leaves \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode>.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>This is a gateway limitation, not a Foxy one\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>It is worth being precise about this, because it is easy to assume Foxy simply does not handle delayed payments. Foxy&#039;s pending-status machinery works, and other delayed payment methods use it: Adyen bank transfer, 2Checkout&#039;s INS notifications and iDEAL all start as \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode> and are updated to \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">approved\u003C\u002Fcode> or \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">rejected\u003C\u002Fcode> when the gateway sends the confirmation. The ACH gateways send no such confirmation. There is nothing for Foxy to act on.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>What you have to do instead\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>Reconcile outside Foxy. Concretely:\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Col order=\"1\">\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Treat a pending ACH transaction as &quot;submitted&quot;, not &quot;paid&quot;.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The order exists and the debit has been sent. Whether the money arrives is not yet known.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Check your gateway or bank on a schedule.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Weekly is a reasonable default — that is what people inside Foxy do for their own ACH monitoring. You are looking for returns: insufficient funds, closed account, wrong account number, or a customer disputing the debit.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Decide your fulfilment rule deliberately.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Shipping immediately on an ACH order means shipping before the payment is confirmed. That may be perfectly fine for you; it should be a decision, not an accident.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>If you use a datafeed, expect \u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>pending\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode>\u003Cstrong> and nothing after it.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">status\u003C\u002Fcode> node on an ACH transaction reads \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">pending\u003C\u002Fcode>, and no follow-up datafeed will arrive to change it. Fulfilment logic that waits for \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">approved\u003C\u002Fcode> will wait forever on an ACH order. If your endpoint currently ignores anything that is not \u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">approved\u003C\u002Fcode>, ACH orders will be silently dropped.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>If you correct the status manually, do it in your own records.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Foxy will not do it for you.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Fol>\u003Cp>If you need automatic, immediate confirmation that a payment succeeded, ACH is the wrong instrument and a card gateway is the right one. Adding Authorize.net ACH does not remove or replace Authorize.net card processing — a payment method set can hold both, and the customer chooses at checkout.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>If you have no existing relationship pushing you one way, Authorize.net ACH is the most widely used ACH gateway among Foxy stores by a large margin.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>What the customer fills in\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>The ACH form on Foxy&#039;s checkout is built from a small set of fields, and \u003Cstrong>the exact set varies by gateway\u003C\u002Fstrong> — this is worth knowing before you write anything that reads the checkout POST.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Common to every ACH gateway:\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>ach_routing_number\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode> — What it is: The nine-digit ABA routing number identifying the customer&#039;s bank. See below.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Cp>Present on most, but not all:\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>ach_name_account\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode> — What it is: The name on the bank account. Labelled \u003Cem>Name on account\u003C\u002Fem>. — Where: All ACH gateways \u003Cstrong>except Vantiv ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong>, which does not collect it.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Ccode class=\"badge bg-soft-danger text-danger\">\u003Cstrong>ach_account_type\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fcode> — What it is: A dropdown offering \u003Cstrong>Checking\u003C\u002Fstrong> or \u003Cstrong>Savings\u003C\u002Fstrong>. — Where: \u003Cstrong>ACH.com only.\u003C\u002Fstrong> No other ACH gateway on Foxy renders an account-type selector. Vantiv ACH submits every transaction as a checking account regardless.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Cp>So there is no universal five-field ACH form. If you are matching on field names — in a checkout customisation, a pre-payment webhook, or anything reading the POST — check the gateway you are actually using.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch3>The account-ownership checkbox\u003C\u002Fh3>\u003Cp>Alongside the bank details, the checkout renders a single checkbox that reads:\u003C\u002Fp>",{"type":832,"blok":836},{"type":1205,"content":1209},"\u003Cp>The customer has to tick it. Foxy&#039;s checkout will not let the form submit otherwise, and there is no setting to turn it off.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>The reason it is there is that ACH is a \u003Cem>pull\u003C\u002Fem>: you are reaching into someone&#039;s bank account and taking money out. NACHA, the body that governs the ACH network, expects the account holder to have authorised a debit before it is submitted, and this checkbox is the customer&#039;s attestation. Without a recorded authorisation, a customer who later disputes the debit is on considerably stronger ground than they would be with a card chargeback.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Refunds and voids: mostly not available through Foxy\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>This is the second card-like expectation that ACH does not meet, and it is easy to miss because the Foxy admin looks the same for every payment method.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>For most ACH gateways, Foxy cannot issue a refund or a void at all.\u003C\u002Fstrong> The attempt fails inside Foxy before any request reaches the gateway, and you get back a message to the effect that the gateway is not configured for that action.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>ACH.com\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: Yes — Foxy can send the request to ACH.com\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Accept.blue ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: Yes — Foxy can send the request to Accept.blue\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Authorize.net ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: \u003Cstrong>No\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Vantiv ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: \u003Cstrong>No\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>PayJunction ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: \u003Cstrong>No\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Paperless ACH\u003C\u002Fstrong> — Refund or void through Foxy: \u003Cstrong>No\u003C\u002Fstrong>\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Cp>Where it says No, the money has still left the customer&#039;s bank — you simply cannot reverse it from Foxy. You return the funds through your gateway&#039;s own interface or through your bank, and you record it yourself. Where it says Yes, Foxy will send the request; whether the gateway accepts it still depends on the gateway&#039;s own rules and on how long ago the debit was submitted.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Either way, treat &quot;can I refund this?&quot; as a question for your gateway, not for Foxy.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>No 3-D Secure, no JavaScript\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>None of Foxy&#039;s ACH gateways use 3-D Secure — there is no such thing for a bank debit — and none of them require gateway JavaScript or an SDK on your checkout. They are plain server-side integrations.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>This is genuinely an advantage rather than a missing feature. There is no authentication step that can fail or add friction, no third-party script that can fail to load, no iframe to style around, and nothing extra to configure in your checkout template. If you have ever debugged a 3-D Secure redirect loop, ACH will feel refreshingly boring.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>There is also no card verification, no AVS and no CSC on ACH, because there is no card. AVS and CSC settings on your gateway account do not apply to ACH transactions.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Testing ACH\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>You can test that ACH works. You cannot test what happens afterwards.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>Every ACH gateway on Foxy can be exercised in test mode to confirm that your checkout accepts bank details and that the gateway accepts the submission. What you cannot rehearse is settlement — for Authorize.net ACH, the vendor has told us that \u003Cstrong>sandbox ACH transactions are always pending and never reach a settled status\u003C\u002Fstrong>, so there is no way to produce a settled or returned test transaction.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>In practice this matters less than it first appears, because Foxy is not told about settlement in production either. A settled sandbox transaction would look no different in Foxy from a pending one. But it does mean you cannot validate your reconciliation process before going live. Work out how you will check for returns \u003Cem>before\u003C\u002Fem> your first live ACH order, not after one bounces.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Ch2>Important notes and caveats\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cul>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>ACH is slow.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Settlement typically takes several days — Authorize.net, for example, states funds arrive within seven days of submission. Nothing is confirmed at the moment the customer checks out.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>ACH payments can be returned after they appear to have gone through.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Insufficient funds, a closed account or a customer dispute can reverse a debit days after the fact. Card fraud tools do not help you here; the mitigation is reconciliation.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Refunds are mostly gateway business, not Foxy business.\u003C\u002Fstrong> See the section above for which gateways Foxy can send a refund or void request to at all. For the rest, refunding or reversing an ACH debit happens entirely between you, your gateway and the bank. Check with your gateway before promising a customer a refund.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>Savings accounts are not universally supported.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Only ACH.com asks the customer whether the account is checking or savings. On the others the form does not offer the choice.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003Cli>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>You still need a gateway relationship.\u003C\u002Fstrong> Adding an ACH payment method in Foxy does not enable ACH on your merchant account. Most providers underwrite ACH separately from card processing; Authorize.net&#039;s eCheck.Net, for instance, requires its own application and approval.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003C\u002Fli>\u003C\u002Ful>\u003Ch2>Troubleshooting\u003C\u002Fh2>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>&quot;My ACH transaction is still pending.&quot;\u003C\u002Fstrong> That is expected, and permanent. See the top of this article.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>&quot;ACH transactions are all declining, but cards work fine.&quot;\u003C\u002Fstrong> Almost always means ACH is not actually enabled on your merchant account, or your gateway has not been told to accept transactions from Foxy. Card credentials working proves nothing about ACH. Check with your gateway.\u003C\u002Fp>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>&quot;Refunding an ACH transaction in Foxy says the gateway is not configured for this action.&quot;\u003C\u002Fstrong> That is expected on Authorize.net ACH, Vantiv ACH, PayJunction ACH and Paperless ACH — Foxy has no refund or void path for those gateways. Issue the refund at your gateway or your bank instead.
